Easily one of The Tasting Room’s most popular recurring events, Grillin’ and Chillin’ on the patio of The Tasting Room Lounge at Midtown is a wine tasting, bar-b-que, cooking demonstration, and a patio party all rolled into one great evening.  Join our “celebrity” chef, Joey Altman, who will be working the grill on the beautiful brick patio overlooking the downtown Houston skyline for an evening of great food, wine, and music.  Chef Altman, a veteran of two highly successful shows on The Food Network, will be flying in from California to prepare five tasting courses of exciting foods, including: tequila-lime prawns escabeche, grilled Moroccan lamb sliders with chilies, Jamaican jerk pork with mango-onion mojo, stuffed chicken breast with grilled corn polenta, and grilled pineapple with coconut-rum cake.  Sommeliers from The Tasting Room will each course with five outstanding wines from the Diageo portfolio.  An accomplished guitarist and member of the Bay Area all-chef Backburner’s Blues Band, Chef Altman promises to join the live band on the patio after the food and wine tasting and jam into the night.  Don’t miss the party!

What does it take to be the best?  You get to decide.  Eight sommeliers from Houston’s finest restaurants and wine bars get together to compete for the title of “best of the best” in a sommelier smackdown.  The sommeliers will have their own stations where they will be pouring wines they have chosen to feature during the competition.  Take your glass and visit each sommelier to taste their wines and to listen to them describe their wine selections for you.  Vote for the sommelier who you believe created the best line-up of wines and provided the best presentation of those wines.  You and our panel of expert judges will decide the winner of the First Annual Houston Cellar Classic “Sommelier Smackdown.”  The winner will receive a great prize, the adulation of the wine-loving public, and The Tasting Room / MAX’s Wine Dive will donate $500 to his or her designated charity.
